This was, without a doubt in my mind, the worst Pirate game to watch this year (to date).
--
Why?
---
1. Struggling prospect Manny Parra shut down the offense.
2. Atrocious work in the field. Of course there was the Freddy-not-knowing-how-many-outs-thing, but once Milwaukee started to pile on, things just got sloppy, even if they didn't cost us runs.
3. The pitching. Paul Maholm wasn't terrible, keeping it close (2-0 in the 6th) but didn't turn in the start we expected at home vs. a bad team. Burnett and Salas each surrendered runs.
4. (most important)--The Pirates were not in the game tonight. Stupid mistakes, lack of hustle, looking at called third strikes, you just didn't see any heart. That's been a strength of this team so far in 2008 with all the comeback wins and the nailbiter games. It wasn't anything like that last night.
----
The streak of win-loss finally ends (in the wrong way) and we're a half game from being in last.
--
The only two runs came on a Bay homer in the 9th off a seriously awful (and ugly) Eric Gagne.
