It's a shame, too, because he did so in one of the most painful ways possible.

Paul Maholm was out-dueling CC Sabathia for the first three innings, but Maholm walked the four men in the fourth, including two with the bases loaded. These were pressure-packed AB's with thousands of fans screaming and waving towels, and it was so awful to watch Maholm--our best pitcher--struggle through those and walk in two runs to the fans' delight.

The Pirates squeaked out a run against CC, but he was still both filthy and a horse. Sabathia--despite pitching on short rest--threw over 100 pitches and went a heck of a lot deeper into the game (7 innings, 1 run, 11 K's) than I expected he would after a 28-pitch first. The Brewers are getting every ounce out of his arm in half-a-season, and that's smart. He'll be someone else's problem next year if it falls off-but tonight he was most definitely the Bucs' problem.

Even though nobody likes to see the Bucs lose like this, it's still a startling thought to know I won't see them on TV until April 6 of next year. That's a LONG time from now.
